Kitesurfing is a sport that, just a decade ago, seemed niche, reserved for a handful of enthusiasts – today, it attracts thousands of people seeking extraordinary experiences, regardless of age or fitness level. But what does this discipline really entail? Is it an activity reserved only for the brave? Do you need to be in top physical condition? What does learning from scratch look like, and why are more and more people choosing Sicily and the Lo Stagnone lagoon as the starting point for their kite adventure?
In this post, we’ll answer these questions – clearly and without any fluff. If you're considering your first kitesurfing course, you’re in the right place.
What exactly is kitesurfing and how does it work?
Kitesurfing is a water sport where you move on a board, powered by the wind using a controlled kite. The key element here is the bar – a stick connected to a harness (trapeze), which allows you to precisely control the kite's movement in the wind window (wind zone). Although it may seem complicated at first, after just a few hours of learning with an instructor, the whole system starts to work naturally and surprisingly intuitively. It’s an extraordinary combination of the freedom of surfing, the dynamics of sailing, and the lightness of paragliding. You don’t need a motor or waves – just wind and a bit of open space. Kitesurfing offers a unique experience of movement, where your "power" comes from natural forces – and that’s what makes it hard to compare to anything else. It’s no wonder that Lo Stagnone is considered one of the best places to learn in Europe – regular wind, shallow water, and almost unlimited space create conditions that are hard to beat.
We turn wind into passion.
Why should you try kitesurfing? What does this sport offer?
Kitesurfing is much more than just a new sport. It’s a lifestyle change.
Here are a few things that kitesurfing can give you:
- Improved fitness: It's not about the gym or cardio. Kitesurfing engages deep muscles, improves coordination, and strengthens the body naturally, without overloading it.
- Mental reset: On the water, there are no phones, emails, or notifications. There’s just the wind, you, and the kite. It’s the perfect detox from everyday life.
- Mindful presence: Kitesurfing teaches concentration, awareness, and reacting to changing conditions. You develop not only your body but also your mind.
- Community: Kitesurfers are part of an open and welcoming community. Spots are places where friendships that last for years are made. On the beach, you'll meet people from all over the world.
It all happens naturally. No pressure. And very often: it’s addictive. Many of our students say it outright: it changed my life. And it's not an exaggeration – because once you feel that freedom, it's hard to go back to regular holidays.

Do I need to be fit to start? Busting the myths.
This is one of the most common myths and reasons why many people give up before even trying. However:
- You don’t need strong arms – you’re not holding the kite "with your muscles." The entire weight is carried by the harness, and you control the bar with ease. It’s all about technique, not strength.
- You don’t need to be twenty – at KITE HABITS, we teach both teenagers and people over 60. Our youngest student was just 6 years old, and the oldest was 72. Age isn’t a barrier, what matters more is the willingness and openness to learn.
- You don’t need to be in peak physical shape – kitesurfing is learned step by step, and the conditions in Lo Stagnone are especially favorable for this. Shallow, calm waters, no waves, and predictable winds create a safe environment where you can focus on technique and progress at your own pace, without pressure. It’s a bit like training in a pool instead of diving straight into the open ocean. It’s no wonder Lo Stagnone is called the "kitesurfing kindergarten" – and it's hard to think of a more accurate description.
Jump higher with every session.
Safety: Is kitesurfing a safe sport?
Yes – as long as you learn under the supervision of an experienced instructor. At Kite Habits, we run courses according to the standards of PZKite (Polish Kiteboarding Association) and IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization), the key organizations setting safety procedures and training stages. We only work with certified equipment from Naish Kiteboarding and Prolimit Polska, tailored to the student’s level.
- Why is a professional kitesurfing course essential?
- You get to know the equipment and its functions, including safety systems and kite power control.
- You learn how to respond to emergency situations before they happen.
- You have the support of an instructor at all times, including through radio communication.
At Kite Habits, we focus on individual approach, small groups, and learning in a friendly atmosphere – because safety is not just about equipment, but most importantly about the right methodology and care.
Fun, learning, and safety.
How much time does it take to learn from scratch?
The learning pace is individual and depends on your predispositions, fitness level, and previous experience with water sports. A standard kitesurfing course (beginner or optimum) typically lasts 8–12 hours and is spread over several days. However, to complete a full beginner course and acquire skills that allow you to safely continue learning on your own, it’s a good idea to plan... ...around 15–20 hours with an instructor.
Thanks to the exceptional conditions in Lo Stagnone – a shallow lagoon, no waves, and stable winds – progress is noticeably faster than in other popular spots like the Baltic Sea or Egypt.
- Day 1: Introduction to the theory, safety rules and procedures, and the first kite control exercises – first on land, then in the water.
- Day 2: Bodydrag, or controlled movement with the kite on the water without the board, and learning precise power management.
- Day 3: Practicing steady pulls, first board starts, and the first successful meters in the glide.
- Day 4+: Independent riding in both directions and gradually developing new skills – such as course control, learning to edge upwind, and the first turns. At this stage, the learning pace becomes increasingly individual – it all depends on your progress, comfort, and readiness. For some, this will be a time of rapid development, while for others, it will be about reinforcing the basics and building confidence on the water.
The lessons are conducted gradually, in safe conditions and at a pace tailored to you, so that you can enjoy each session – whether it's your first step or you're returning to the water after a longer break.
Pro tip: Not every student progresses through all the stages at the same pace – this is a guideline, not a schedule with a stopwatch. The key is safety, comfort, and having fun.
Your first kitesurfing lesson – this is where it all begins.
Why choose Lo Stagnone in Sicily?
It’s no coincidence that Lo Stagnone is considered one of the best places to learn kitesurfing in Europe – and not just by instructors, but most importantly by the students themselves.
- Shallow lagoon – for hundreds of meters, the water reaches your waist or knees, providing a great sense of safety. You can easily stand up, adjust your position, and catch your breath. No stress about deep water.
- Stable wind – windy days are the norm here from April until the end of October. And that means more time on the water and fewer canceled lessons.
- No waves – the smooth surface of the water allows you to focus 100% on your technique. Every maneuver becomes easier, especially in the beginning.
- Unique atmosphere – sunsets over the salt pans of Marsala, local wine, simple and delicious cuisine, and the Sicilian rhythm of life that reminds you there's another way to live. It's hard to find a better context for learning anything – especially kitesurfing.
This place attracts not only because of its conditions but also because of the atmosphere that makes people come back year after year – some with their own gear, others for another dose of progress.
Sicily. Kite. And an orange-colored sky.
